Leo Deen was struggling to come to terms with recent family bereavements, and decided to walk a huge trek from Congleton, in Cheshire, to Glasgow, Scotland while pushing a garden wheelbarrow.

The 57-year-old was devastated when his best friend, Joey Henshaw, passed away in January, which was followed by the death of his border collie, Rollo, just weeks later.

The farmer said: “Joey was like a brother to me and it was really upsetting when he passed away. Then Rollo died a few weeks later. Rollo was my best soul mate, he was as sweet as a nut.”

The white and tan collie lived with Leo on his Timbersbrook farm for three years, but began rapidly losing weight when he was diagnosed with cancer, dying just weeks later.

But when Leo’s sister, Lea Wright, died five weeks ago, he needed to do something to take his mind off the losses he’d endured over the last year.

He said: “I didn’t believe that Lea died – she was only 18 months older than me.

“I needed to get closure, and even though I’d seen the coffin I didn’t believe she was dead. I needed something to do so I decided I was going to walk to Glasgow.”

As the heart-wrenching video of Zeus paying his final respects went viral, people all over the world were moved by the emotional display of loyalty and grief. The footage, which captured a dog’s sorrow as he bid farewell to his beloved owner, sparked an outpouring of support and sympathy, reminding viewers of the incredible bond that can exist between humans and their pets.

The heartfelt moment Zeus shared with his owner at the funeral touched millions, as many people could relate to the depth of love and devotion that dogs show to their families. In a world often marked by hustle and noise, the video served as a stark reminder of the quieter, simpler emotions that tie us all together. Animals, especially dogs, have a unique ability to understand and express loyalty, and this scene was a testament to that unspoken bond.

For Zeus, the moment was not just a final goodbye—it was the culmination of years of companionship, shared memories, and unconditional love. The pit bull had stood by his owner through thick and thin, offering comfort and companionship when it was needed most. Now, in her final moments, Zeus’s presence was a poignant reflection of the deep connection they had forged.

The comments on the video revealed how deeply viewers were affected. Many expressed gratitude for the family allowing Zeus the opportunity to say goodbye, a gesture that offered some comfort in the midst of grief. It’s not often that we see animals given such an opportunity, and this rare moment resonated with many people who had experienced similar losses. One commenter wrote, “This is the kind of love that transcends words. Thank you for letting him say goodbye.”

Others were moved by the raw emotion displayed by the dog, with many commenting on how they believed that dogs understand death in their own way. One social media user noted, “Dogs always seem to know when we are hurting, and they grieve in their own way.” This sentiment is something that many pet owners can relate to, as animals often show empathy for their human companions, providing comfort during moments of sorrow and loss.

The video also sparked a conversation about the loyalty and emotional depth of dogs. Many viewers pointed out that dogs, despite not being able to speak our language, have an innate ability to understand and respond to our emotions. The bond between a dog and its owner is one that transcends the physical world, and this farewell between Zeus and his owner highlighted the unspoken connection that defines their relationship. One TikTok user commented, “Dogs confirm that our loved ones are still among us after they pass away.” This thought echoed a belief held by many—that animals sense the spirit of their owners, even after death, and that love endures beyond the physical realm.

As the video continued to circulate online, people shared their own stories of grief and loss, with some expressing that they had witnessed similar moments with their own pets. Many mentioned how animals play a crucial role in helping us heal during times of sorrow. The footage of Zeus was a reminder that animals offer a special kind of support, one that is often quiet but always present, offering a sense of comfort in the darkest times.

Just as Zeus mourned the loss of his owner, so too did many people find solace in the video, recognizing the universal nature of love and loss. The story of this grieving dog was a reminder that grief is not confined to humans alone. Our pets, too, experience loss and sorrow, and they often grieve in their own silent, powerful way.

In a world that can sometimes feel disconnected and impersonal, the viral video of Zeus was a small but significant reminder of the deep, emotional bonds that connect us to the animals in our lives. It prompted people to pause and reflect on the love they share with their pets, encouraging them to cherish every moment. Zeus’s farewell to his owner was not just a final act of love; it was a reflection of the profound impact that animals have on our lives.

As the video spread across social media, it also brought attention to the importance of compassion and empathy in times of loss. The family’s decision to allow Zeus to say goodbye was a powerful act of kindness that acknowledged the emotional needs of the dog. In doing so, they demonstrated that the bond between a pet and its owner is not only about companionship but also about recognizing and honoring the emotions that come with loss.

Zeus’s story, alongside other stories of grieving pets and their owners, serves as a reminder that love knows no boundaries. The compassion we extend to animals, especially in their moments of grief, can offer healing and comfort. Just as we mourn the loss of our loved ones, so too do our pets, and they, too, deserve the space to grieve and remember the love they shared.

In the case of Zeus, his final act of saying goodbye was not only a moment of closure for the dog but also for the family. It was an opportunity to reflect on the love and joy that the pit bull brought into their lives, just as their owner had. The bond between Zeus and his owner was one that will live on, not just in the memories of their time together but in the heart-wrenching yet beautiful image of Zeus standing by the coffin—forever loyal, forever loving.

As we move forward, the story of Zeus and his owner serves as a poignant reminder that our pets are not just animals; they are family. Their love for us is as deep as our love for them, and it transcends time, space, and even death. Just as Zeus stood by his owner’s side, we too should stand by our pets, offering them love and compassion in both life and death. For in the end, the love between a pet and its owner is never truly gone; it lives on, carried in the hearts of those who loved them.
